Gunnison-Crested
Butte, Colorado-
Pure & Simple
Authentic,
genuine, unpretentious, laidback and friendly
are words used to describe the experience
in the beautiful Gunnison Valley. Situated
in the Gunnison National Forest with over
1.8 million acres of public lands in Southwest
Colorado, these 1880’s Western and Victorian
mountain towns know how to serve up the
same friendly hospitality our pioneering
ancestors were well known for. Gunnison,
Crested Butte, Tin Cup, Gothic Almont,
Crystal, Pitkin, Marble, Powderhorn and
Mt. Crested Butte all located within 35
miles of one another, have rich and colorful
histories much of which is chronicled in
unique and interesting museums and stores;
Gunnison’s Pioneer Museum, the Crested
Butte Mountain Heritage Museum, Pitkin
Museum, Gothic Museum and even the General
Store in Tin Cup all stir interest about
what life was like back in the 1880’s.
Complementing
the old west, outdoor recreation and the
arts are abundant. Horseback ride or take
an overnight pack trip into the Maroon
Bells Wilderness Area. Mountain bike, hike
or camp in the Gunnison National Forest
where an extensive trails system and over
54 camping areas beckon the explorer in
you! And, enjoy two arts centers that will
delight many of your senses. Performing
arts, visual arts and music abound, year
round!
Key
events include this years 20th annual Wildflower
Festival (Crested Butte is the “Official
Wildflower Capital of Colorado”) and Cattlemen’s
Days in Gunnison is Colorado’s oldest and
longest running rodeo celebrating the 106th
this year. These are just two of over 100
events and festivals that take place each
year.
With
over 3,900 miles of streams, many that
boast Gold Medal trophy trout waters you
can walk, wade and float in picturesque
streams and rivers. Fishing is also popular
on one of our 9 alpine lakes and reservoirs.
Or do some boating on Colorado’s largest
body of water, the Blue Mesa, home to Curecanti
National Recreation area and the headwaters
of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National
Park. White water rafting, kayaking and
floating are in their peak all summer long. |
